  • Madurodam is all about the experience. It is a challenge to take it all in during your voyage of discovery through the Netherlands in miniature. Turn the gears of the world’s largest steam engine and turn water into land. In the interactive attraction “the Waterwolf” you pump away 800 billion litres of water from the Haarlemmermeer and defeat the fierce “Waterwolf”. Roll up your sleeves and learn to fly at Schiphol or fill containers in the port of Rotterdam.

    2 – HET BINNENHOF

    DEN HAAG – 1230

    The Binnenhof (Inner court) is the centre of Dutch politics. The Prime Minister’s Office is located in the famous “Torentje” (Turret).

    3 – MAURITSHUIS

    DEN HAAG-1644

    This museum has a large collection of paintings by Dutch masters. The most famous painting is the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer.

    4- FRANS HALSMUSEUM

    HAARLEM -1607

    The museum has the largest collection of paintings in the world. Hals’ lively paintings have had a major influence on subsequent painters.

    5- HUIZE SCHREURS

    VENLO – 16th century

    Behind the facade runs a wall that divides the building in two: a two-under-one-roof. This type of house was not very common in the 15th century.

    6 – STADHUIS

    ROERMOND – 1700

    The group of statues on the tower of the town hall refer to historical events in Roermond.

    7 – ONZE-LIEVE-VROUWEBASILIEK

    MAASTRICHT – 11th century

    It is probably the oldest Christian church in the Netherlands and is named after a statue in the chapel: Sterre der Zee, another name for Mary.

    ALKMAAR – 1593

    The cheese market is the oldest and largest in the Netherlands. Cheese has been weighed, transported and traded for hundreds of years.

    10 – MARKIEZENHOF

    BERGEN OP ZOOM-1485

    At the end of the Middle Ages, Bergen op Zoom was an important and rich trading city. It included a palace to receive guests.

    11 – NEDERLANDS TEXTIELMUSEUM

    TILBURG 1876-1878

    In this former textile factory, you can now learn all there is to know about the textile history of the Netherlands.

    12 – GOUDKANTOOR

    GRONINGEN -1635

    In the nineteenth century, gold and silver objects were approved in the Goudkantoor and provided with a mark.

    14 – GRAVENSTEEN

    ZIERIKZEE -1524

    Gravensteen has served as a city prison for four hundred years. The wooden celt walls are carved with drawings bnd texts of the prisoners.

    15 – VALKHOF

    NIJMEGEN – 14th century

    The valkhof, originally a castle, is located on a hill on the river Waal. The building on top of the 35 meter high hill are among the oldest in the Netherlands.

    18 – SINT-JANSBASILIEK

    DEN BOSCH 1220-1530

    The St. John’s is known for its ornaments and some 600 statues of professions or animals of symbolic significance, such as monkey, bird of prey and monster.

    20 – KONINKLIJK THEATER CARRÉ

    AMSTERDAM – 1887

    One of the most famous circus theatres in the Netherlands, named after the first Director of the circus: Carré.

    21 – CONCERTGEBOUW

    AMSTERDAM -1888

    The concert hall has magnificent acoustics. It is one of the most famous concert halls in the world.

    22 – WESTERKERK

    AMSTERDAM -1620

    The church became world-famous because of Anne Frank’s diary; from her room in the secret annexe she looked out over the Westertoren on a daily basis.

    23 – ANNE FRANK MUSEUM

    AMSTERDAM -1635

    Anne Frank had to go in hiding during the Second World War, and wrote her world-famous diary from the “Achterhuis” in Amsterdam during this period.

    24 – PORTUGESE SYNAGOGE

    AMSTERDAM-1475

    This synagogue is still used as a place of worship. It was once the largest synagogue in the world.

    25 – MUNTTOREN

    AMSTERDAM 1619-1620

    Until the eighteenth century, many cities had their own mint house. This tower commemorates the mint house in Amsterdam.

    26 – RIJKSMUSEUM

    AMSTERDAM – 1800

    In the Rijksmuseum you will find most of the famous Dutch works of art. The most famous painting is the “Nachwacht” by Rembrand van Rijn.

    27 – MAGNA PLAZA

    AMSTERDAM 1895-1899

    This building used to be Amsterdam’s main post office. Currently, the monumental building is a huge shopping centre.

    28 – VOLKSBUURT JORDAAN

    AMSTERDAM – 17th century

    The Jordaan is a neighbourhood, built for the common people. It is still an icon through the maze of narrow canals, streets and beautiful facades.

    29 – NIEUWE KERK

    AMSTERDAM – 15th century

    This church is a national icon on the Dam where official ceremonies take place, such as marriage and inauguration of King Willem-Alexander.

    30 – NATIONAAL MONUMENT OP DE DAM

    AMSTERDAM -1956

    The National Monument op de Dam commemorates all Dutch victims of war and peacekeeping missions anywhere in the world.

    31 – KORENMETERSHUIS

    AMSTERDAM – 1620

    In the seventeenth century, grain was very important for trade in Amsterdam. The corn metres ensure that trade is fair.

    32 – KONINKLIJK PALEIS OP DE DAM

    AMSTERDAM – 1648-1665

    Amsterdam needed a town hall in the seventeenth century. This palace on Dam Square is now a museum. Here the king receives official guests.

    33 – ACADEMIEGEBOUW

    LEIDEN -1516

    This building is the oldest university in the Netherlands: the University of Leiden was founded in 1575 by William of Orange.

    DEN HAAG-1736

    A city palace with a royal history: King Willem l and Willem II liked to stay here “at the court”.

    35 – GRACHTENPALEIZEN

    AMSTERDAM – 17th century

    The Gouden Bocht is home to the most impressive canal palaces in Amsterdam. They are reminiscent of the prosperity of the 17th century.

    36 – PRINSENHOF

    DELFT-1403

    The Prinsenhof was named after Prince William of Orange, the father of the Country. He often stayed here in the 16th century, and in the end, he was even murdered here.

    DEN HAAG -1858

    This elegant hotel is located on one of the best known streets in The Hague: the Lange Voorhout. Many famous visitors spent the night here.

    42 – PLANETARIUM EISINGA

    FRANEKER 1774-1781

    Eise Esinga built this home in the 17th century to function as a planetarium. It is the oldest still operating planetarium in the world.

    WAGENINGEN – 1852

    This hotel, which is centuries old, has been known since 1945 as the place where the Germans capitulated after World War II. Long live freedom!

    44 – KOPPELPOORT

    AMERSFOORT – 1400

    This is the only gateway in the Netherlands that is both a land gate and a water gate at the same time. It is a real eye-catcher in Amersfoort.

    This mill is located in Schiedam, a true milling town. The 6 tallest mills in the world can be found here, including the 30 meters high mill, the Palm tree.

    The picturesque castle Nijenrode is now a leading University, but it was built on the ruins of a medieval tower in the 16th century.

    In the 15th century, Zwolle was a rich city, as can be seen from this city gate. The gate is wide, so all carts can go under the gate.

    APELDOORN – 1684

    This is the best preserved medieval castle in the Netherlands. A square water fortress, surrounded by a moat.

    Drakensteyn Castle is the private castle of Princess Beatrix, mother of King Willem Alexander and patroness of Madurodam.

    This former centre for arts and culture now accommodates the Dutch Institute of International Relations Clingendael.

    NIEUWEGEIN-1938

    The ingenious lock complex between the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam is named after Princess Beatrix.

    The former headquarters of the ING has no square angles. Due to the slanting lines it Is also called ‘Zandkasteel’ (the sand castle).

    HOENDERLOO – 1914

    The form of this house, designed by architect Berlage, refers to its function: it is a hunting lodge and thus has the shape of on antler.

    80 – RIETVELD SCHRÖDERHUIS

    UTRECHT – 1924

    This house was designed by one of the most famous Dutch Architects, Gerrit Rietveld, who became world- famous for his wooden designer chairs.

    Until 2009, this all-glass skyscraper in Rotterdam was the highest office in the Netherlands.

    82 – AFAS CIRCUSTHEATER

    You cannot see circus performances here anymore, but legendary musicals have been attracting millions of visitors for years.

    84 – BESIENDERSHUIS

    NIJMEGEN -1525

    For almost 500 years, this Besienderhuis has been looking out over the river Waal. Ships sailing over the Waal used to have to pay toll to the “besiender” here.

    85 – DWINGELDERVELD

    This visitor centre is located in the middle of the Dwingelderveld National Park. This is the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe.

    NAARDEN

    The nickname “Het Spaanse Huis” (The Spanish House) is reminiscent of the horrific event of 1572 when Spanish troops murdered a large part of the population of Naarden.

    90 – FRIESE BOERDERIJ

    WUNSERADIEL – 1823

    From above, this Frisian farmhouse looks like a lying cow. It is therefore called a head-neck-body farmhouse.

    91 – GRONINGER MUSEUM

    GRONINGEN – 1994

    Just the building of this museum for art and design is worth a visit. The styles, colours and pattern ensure diversity in the architecture.

    92 – HELPOORT

    MAASTRICHT – 1229

    This is the largest and oldest city gate that has been preserved in the Netherlands.

    95 – HUYS TE WARMONT

    WARMOND – 1300

    This castle-like building was formerly inhabited by the lords of the great barony Warmond.

    96 – SCHEEPVAARTMUSEUM

    AMSTERDAM – 1656

    In this museum you will learn a lot about shipping In the Netherlands. The glass roof is inspired by the compass lines of old sea charts.

    97 – KANTONGERECHT

    UTRECHT -1648

    The District Court for minor criminal matters at the St. John’s cemetery is now part of the University of Utrecht.

    This shop building in The Hague is also called the “Snoeptrommel” (candy box) because of the coloured tiles and the roof that looks like a lid.

    This building is both architecturally special and sustainable. Parts of the previous building were used for the new design.
